# First in, first out: rotating a freezer stash without waste

[Dalo Baby Editorial](/learn/editorial-policy)Published September 4, 2026Last reviewed September 4, 20265 min read

Use the oldest bag of frozen breast milk first, because milk composition changes across lactation and stored fat content falls over time. Label each bag with the expression date before filling, freeze flat, file upright with the oldest at the front, and take from the front while adding to the back.

## Key takeaways

- Milk composition changes across lactation, so a bag from month two is not interchangeable with one from month eight.
- Home storage measurably reduced the fat content of stored milk in one study — a reason to rotate, not a reason to panic.
- Six months in the freezer is a quality window, not a safety cliff; the fridge figure differs between CDC and NHS, so use the shorter one.
- Label with the expression date before you fill the bag, freeze flat, file upright oldest-at-the-front, take from the front and add to the back.
- Freeze in the portions your baby actually takes — thawed milk cannot be refrozen and keeps 24 hours.

Almost every freezer stash that gets thrown away was thrown away for the same reason: the bags at the front were the newest ones. Nobody plans that. It happens because a freezer is a stack, and a stack hands you back the last thing you put in. First in, first out is the fix, and it is a five-minute system rather than a habit you have to remember at 3am.

## Why the oldest bag should go first

Two reasons, and only one of them is about spoilage. The first is that milk is not one substance. Its composition changes from colostrum to late lactation, within a single feed, by time of day and between mothers.[\[4\]](#ref-ball) Milk expressed in month two is a reasonable match for a two-month-old; by the time your baby is eight months old it is milk from a different stage of your own lactation.

The second is that frozen milk is not frozen in time. In a study of donated milk, home storage conditions significantly reduced triacylglycerol levels — the fat — while glucose and antioxidant markers held steady.[\[5\]](#ref-froz) It was donor milk in one milk bank's chain rather than your kitchen, and the sample was small, so treat it as a reason to rotate rather than a reason to worry about what is already in there.

## The windows you are rotating against

Rotation only means something if you know what you are rotating against. The figures below are the ones the major health services publish, and they differ — not because anyone is wrong, but because they weigh the same evidence with different margins.

Two figures worth carrying: the fridge windows differ between authorities, so if you want one number, use the shorter one.[\[1\]](#ref-bm1) And the freezer figure is a quality window, not a safety cliff — six months is where milk is at its best, which is exactly what makes rotation worth doing.[\[2\]](#ref-bm2)

The date on the bag is the date it was expressed

Not the date you froze it, and not the date you want to use it. If milk sat in the fridge for two days before going in the freezer, those two days already happened. Write the expression date, and write it before you fill the bag — a full bag is a bad writing surface.

## The system

### Build it once, then stop thinking about it

The aim is a freezer where the next bag to use is the only one you can reach. If you have to search, the system has already failed.

1. 1

    Label before you fill

Date and volume, written on the empty bag. Add the time of day if you separate morning and evening milk.

2. 2

    Freeze flat, then file upright

Flat bags freeze faster, stack thinner and thaw quicker. Once solid, stand them upright in a container like files in a drawer, oldest at the front.

3. 3

    Use one container per month

A labelled box or bag per month means the rotation is visible at a glance instead of being reconstructed from handwriting.

4. 4

Take from the front, add to the back

One rule, enforced by the physical layout. Nobody in the house has to remember anything except which end is which.

5. 5

    Audit monthly

Five minutes: move anything within a month of its window to a 'use next' box at the front of the fridge or freezer.

## Portion size is half the system

Rotation fails most often on volume rather than on dates. A 180 ml bag thawed for a baby who takes 120 ml means 60 ml discarded every time, because thawed milk cannot be refrozen and keeps for 24 hours in the fridge.[\[3\]](#ref-bm4) Freeze in the portions your baby actually takes, not in the portions your pump produced.

- Freeze most bags at 60–120 ml, with a few small 30–60 ml bags as top-ups.
- Thaw the small bag second — start with a portion you know will be finished.
- If you regularly overshoot, work from real feed volumes rather than a chart: the [milk volume calculator](/tools/milk-volume-calculator) will give you a starting range.
- Pooling a day's output into even portions is easier than splitting it later — that is what [the pitcher method](/learn/breastmilk/pitcher-method) is for.

## When milk is approaching the end of its window

Use it, rather than saving it for a special occasion that never comes. Older milk is still milk — the point of rotation is that it gets used while it is at its best, not that it becomes unusable on a particular day.

- Move it to the front of the freezer and use it for the next few bottles.
- Mix it with fresher milk in the same bottle if you are worried about a smell or taste change.
- If your baby has started solids, older milk can go into food — porridge, purées, anything not heated to boiling.
- Donation is possible in some countries but is regulated and screened; ask your milk bank rather than arranging it privately.

A stash that never gets used is not a safety net

If bags are expiring untouched, you are pumping more than you need — and an oversupply carries its own costs in blocked ducts, mastitis and time. Rotating faster is not the fix; pumping less is. Our guide to building a stash without causing oversupply covers how much is actually enough.

Let the freezer keep its own inventory

Dalo Milk Stash tracks every bag by date and volume, flags what to use next and warns you before something reaches the end of its window — so first in, first out happens without a spreadsheet.

## The five-minute monthly audit

Once a month, empty the freezer bin onto the counter, sort oldest to newest, and put anything within four weeks of its window into a 'use next' box. Note the total. If the total has not moved in two months, you are storing more than you use, and the honest response is to pump less rather than to buy a second freezer — [building a stash without causing oversupply](/learn/breastmilk/freezer-stash-without-oversupply) covers how much is enough.[\[2\]](#ref-bm2)

Local guidance is worth checking as well as the international figures, because national health services publish their own storage advice and it is the version your health visitor will be working from.[\[3\]](#ref-bm4)

## Questions, answered

How long does breast milk keep in the freezer?

At −18°C the CDC gives six months as best and up to twelve as acceptable, while the NHS gives six months. Both are quality windows rather than a point at which milk becomes unsafe, which is precisely why rotating the oldest bag out first is worth the small amount of effort.

Does frozen breast milk lose nutrients over time?

Some. In one study of donated milk, home storage significantly reduced fat content while glucose and antioxidant markers stayed stable. It was a small sample from one milk bank's chain, so the sensible response is to use older milk sooner rather than to discard what you already have.

Can I refreeze milk I thawed but did not use?

No. Thawed milk keeps for about 24 hours in the fridge and should not be refrozen. This is why portion size matters more than most people expect — freezing in 60 to 120 ml portions rather than whatever the pump produced is what stops the waste.

My bags keep expiring untouched. What am I doing wrong?

Probably nothing about rotation — you are most likely pumping more than you need. A stash that never turns over is oversupply in storage form, with its own costs in blocked ducts and time. The fix is pumping less rather than rotating faster.

Pooling a day's milk into one pitcher makes bottles easier — and the storage maths easier to get wrong. The one rule that governs it, and how long expressed milk actually keeps.

### Paced bottle feeding: how and why

A tipped-up bottle lets gravity set the pace. Pacing hands the speed back to your baby — horizontal bottle, upright baby, regular pauses — and makes overfeeding much less likely.
