# The pitcher method: how to pool 24 hours of milk safely

[Dalo Baby Editorial](/learn/editorial-policy)Published September 3, 2026Last reviewed September 3, 20263 min read

The pitcher method pools a day's expressed milk into one covered container in the fridge. The governing rule is that the whole pitcher takes the age of the oldest milk in it, so date it from the first session, not the last. Chill each new session before adding it, and start a fresh pitcher each day.

## Key takeaways

- The whole pitcher takes the age of the oldest milk in it. Date it when you start it.
- Chill each new session before adding it — warm milk rewarms everything already there.
- One pitcher per day. Never top up yesterday's.
- Keep it at the back of the fridge, not in the door.
- Fridge guidance genuinely differs: CDC says 4 days, NHS accepts up to 8.

Pumping five times a day leaves you with five small, differently aged bottles. The pitcher method pools them into one — which makes bottles easier to make up, and makes the storage maths much easier to get wrong if you do not know the one rule that governs it.

## What the pitcher method is

You express into a single covered container kept in the fridge, adding each session's milk to it through the day, and make up bottles from that pitcher rather than from individual bottles. At the end of the period you start a fresh pitcher.

It solves two real problems. Fat content varies between sessions and across the day, so pooling evens out what any single bottle contains. And it removes the daily jigsaw of which half-full bottle to use next.

## The one rule that makes it safe

The whole pitcher takes the age of the oldest milk in it

This is the rule everything else follows from. Add milk expressed at 8am to a pitcher and the entire pitcher is dated 8am — including the milk you add at 6pm. Date the pitcher when you start it, never when you last topped it up.

That is why a pitcher is a 24-hour tool rather than an open-ended one, and why chilling fresh milk before adding it matters: adding warm milk to cold rewarms the whole container.[\[1\]](#ref-bm1)

### Running a pitcher safely

One pitcher per day. The clock starts with the first session, not the last.

1. 1

Start the pitcher with your first session

Express into a clean, covered container and put it straight in the fridge — at the back, not in the door, where the temperature is steadier.

2. 2

Chill each later session before adding it

Cool the new milk in the fridge first, then combine. Adding body-warm milk to chilled milk raises the temperature of everything already in there.

3. 3

Label with the time of the FIRST session

Not the last. This one habit is the difference between the method being safe and being a guess.

4. 4

Make bottles from the pitcher, not from the tap

Pour what the next feed needs. Anything your baby does not finish is governed by the leftover rule, not by the pitcher's date.

5. 5

Start a new pitcher the next day

Do not top up yesterday's. Freeze whatever is left over from the old one if it is still within its window.

## How long expressed milk keeps

For a healthy, full-term baby at home. These are the numbers the pitcher's date is measured against:

Where it is

How long

Room temperature

Up to 4 hours

Refrigerator

Up to 4 days (CDC) — the NHS says up to 8 days at 4°C or lower

Freezer

About 6 months is best; up to 12 months acceptable

Thawed, in the fridge

Use within 24 hours from fully thawed

Warmed or brought to room temperature

Use within 2 hours

Left over after a feed

Use within 2 hours, then discard

Storage windows for expressed breast milk

Guidance genuinely differs between countries

The fridge window is the one that varies most: the CDC says four days, the NHS accepts up to eight at 4°C or lower. Neither is wrong — they weigh the same evidence differently. If you want one number, take the shorter one; if you want your country's number, use the source below.

Check the guidance that applies where you live, and use it consistently rather than mixing the most generous figure from each.[\[3\]](#ref-bm3)

## Where people go wrong

- Dating the pitcher from the last top-up. It restarts a clock that never restarted.
- Adding warm milk straight to the cold pitcher, which rewarms everything already in it.[\[1\]](#ref-bm1)
- Keeping the pitcher in the fridge door, where the temperature swings every time it opens.
- Rolling yesterday's leftovers into today's pitcher, which quietly gives the new pitcher yesterday's age.

The pitcher, tracked for you

Dalo Milk Stash's Digital Pitcher tracks pooled milk in the fridge against the age of the oldest session in it, so the date on the jug is never the thing you have to remember.

## Questions, answered

Can I add warm milk straight to the pitcher?

No. Cool the new milk in the fridge first, then combine. Adding body-warm milk to a chilled pitcher raises the temperature of everything already in it, which is exactly what the storage windows assume has not happened.

How long can the pitcher itself sit in the fridge?

It is governed by the oldest milk in it, not by when you last added to it. Most people run a pitcher for one day and start a fresh one the next, which keeps the arithmetic simple and stays well inside every country's fridge window.

Can I freeze milk from the pitcher?

Yes, as long as it is still within its fridge window — and the freezer clock then starts from the pitcher's original date, not from when you froze it. Never refreeze milk that has already been thawed.

### How to build a freezer stash without causing oversupply

"Pump after every feed" is how people end up with oversupply, blocked ducts and a freezer they never use. How much you actually need, and how to build it from a small deliberate surplus.

### Paced bottle feeding: how and why

A tipped-up bottle lets gravity set the pace. Pacing hands the speed back to your baby — horizontal bottle, upright baby, regular pauses — and makes overfeeding much less likely.
