# Pumping, supply and milk storage: the complete guide

[Dalo Baby Editorial](/learn/editorial-policy)Published September 4, 2026Last reviewed September 4, 20264 min read

Milk production is regulated inside the breast: milk left there slows synthesis and frequent, complete removal speeds it up, so frequency and drainage are the only reliable levers. Pump output measures the pump, not your supply — weight gain, nappies and a content baby do. Fridge storage differs by authority: CDC four days, NHS up to eight at 4°C.

## Key takeaways

- Milk removal drives production. Frequency and drainage are the levers; food, drink and supplements are not.
- Adding hands-on massage and compression to pumping raised daily production by 48% in one study — technique beats minutes.
- Breastfed babies feed 11 times a day on average, with a range of 6 to 18, and frequency does not predict how much a mother makes.
- What you get from a pump is not a reading of your supply. Weight, nappies and a content baby are.
- Fridge windows differ by authority: CDC 4 days, NHS up to 8 at 4°C. Use the shorter one if you want a single number.

This is the map for everything we have written about expressing, supply and storing milk. If you are somewhere specific — building a stash, going back to work, trying to stop triple feeding, holding a bottle a baby will not take — the links below go straight there. If you are at the start and not sure which question you are actually asking, read this page first: almost all of it comes down to one mechanism.

## One principle explains most of it

Milk production is regulated mostly inside the breast. Milk left in the breast slows synthesis; a breast that is drained well and often speeds it up. When low production is objectively confirmed, the interventions that matter are the frequency and the completeness of milk removal — not what you eat, drink or buy.[\[1\]](#ref-km) Every decision further down this page is a version of the same question: which removals are you keeping?

48%

the increase in daily milk production when hands-on massage and compression were added to electric pumping, in mothers of preterm infants[\[2\]](#ref-mo)

That figure is the clearest thing in the literature about pumping, and it is about technique rather than time.[\[2\]](#ref-mo) It is why [power pumping](/learn/breastmilk/power-pumping) is worth trying before a longer session, and why an [exclusive pumping schedule](/learn/breastmilk/exclusive-pumping-schedule) is built around how often you remove milk rather than how many minutes you sit there.

## How much is normal — and why the question misleads

In a 24-hour study of exclusively breastfeeding mothers, babies fed 11 times a day on average, with a range from 6 to 18, and there was no relationship between how often a baby fed and how much milk their mother produced across the day.[\[3\]](#ref-ke) Normal frequencies, suckling times and volumes are extremely variable, which is exactly why a parent comparing themselves with an average very often concludes wrongly that they are short.[\[1\]](#ref-km)

The bottle is not the measurement

How much you get from a pump tells you how your breasts respond to that pump on that day. It is not a reading of your supply, and it is not what anyone assessing your baby will look at. Weight along your baby's own curve, nappies in the expected pattern and a baby who finishes a feed content are the measures that count.

Those are the signs to check before changing anything.[\[4\]](#ref-enough) If you are working out what to put in a bottle rather than what your body is doing, our [milk volume calculator](/tools/milk-volume-calculator) starts from weight and age.

## Storage: the numbers, and the disagreement behind them

Two authorities that read the same evidence publish different fridge windows. The CDC gives four days.[\[5\]](#ref-bm1) The NHS accepts up to eight days at 4°C or lower.[\[6\]](#ref-bm2) Neither is wrong; they weigh the same data differently. If you want one number to work from, use the shorter one — and check what your own health service says, because that is the version your midwife or health visitor will be using.

Where each figure comes from

The freezer figure is a quality window rather than a safety cliff, which is the whole argument for rotating a stash rather than hoarding it.[\[7\]](#ref-bm4) The per-scenario detail — pooling, cooling before you combine, portion sizes that stop you pouring milk away — is in the [pitcher method](/learn/breastmilk/pitcher-method) and [first in, first out](/learn/breastmilk/first-in-first-out-freezer-stash).

Dalo Milk Stash

Stop doing this arithmetic in your head

Dalo Milk Stash tracks what is in the freezer, how old each bag is and how many days it actually covers — so the oldest milk gets used first without you keeping a mental ledger.

## What this guide will not tell you

It will not name a food, drink or supplement that reliably increases supply, because the levers with evidence behind them are frequency and drainage.[\[1\]](#ref-km) It will not give you a volume your baby should be taking, because the useful measures are weight, nappies and how your baby is at the end of a feed rather than a number in a bottle. And it will not tell you that any of this is required: combining breast and bottle is an ordinary way to feed a baby, not a failed version of something else.[\[8\]](#ref-mix)

Go slowly whenever you change the pattern — production takes about five to seven days to settle after a feed is added or dropped, and moving faster than that is how engorgement and mastitis happen.[\[9\]](#ref-adj) If feeding hurts, if weight gain stalls, or if you are dreading every session, that is a conversation with a midwife, health visitor or feeding specialist rather than another schedule tweak.[\[7\]](#ref-bm4)

Before you act on this

This guide is general information about healthy, full-term babies. It does not replace advice from your paediatrician, health visitor, midwife or dietitian, who know your baby. If you are worried about your baby's feeding, growth, breathing or sleep, contact a health professional.

## Questions, answered

How do I know if my milk supply is actually low?

Not from the pump. Low supply is assessed from your baby: weight gain along their own curve, wet and dirty nappies in the expected pattern, and a baby who comes off a feed calm rather than frantic. Normal feeding frequencies and volumes vary so widely that comparing yourself with an average is the most common way to conclude wrongly that you are short.

Does pumping more often really make more milk?

More complete and more frequent removal does, yes — that is the mechanism production runs on. But technique matters at least as much as extra sessions: adding hands-on massage and compression to electric pumping raised daily volumes by 48% in mothers who were pumping less often than before, not more.

How long does breast milk keep in the fridge?

It depends which authority you follow, and they genuinely differ: the CDC gives four days, the NHS accepts up to eight days at 4°C or lower. Both are reading the same evidence and weighting it differently. If you want one number, use four days, and check your own health service's guidance because that is what your midwife or health visitor will be working from.

Where should I start if I am only just beginning to pump?

Decide what the pump is for first, because the schedule follows from that. Occasional bottles, a freezer stash, exclusive pumping and bridging a feeding problem are four different jobs with four different rhythms. Our exclusive pumping schedule covers the full-time case, the freezer stash guide covers building a store without ending up with oversupply, and the pitcher method covers pooling and storing what you collect.
