# The 2-to-1 nap transition: age, signs and a schedule that works

[Dalo Baby Editorial](/learn/editorial-policy)Published September 4, 2026Last reviewed September 4, 20264 min read

Most toddlers drop to one nap between 13 and 18 months, with the single afternoon nap settling between 15 and 24 months. Move the morning nap 15 minutes later every few days until it starts near midday, bring lunch forward, allow two-nap days in between, and expect four to six weeks.

## Key takeaways

- A single afternoon nap is established between 15 and 24 months; most children move between 13 and 18.
- A week of morning-nap refusal around twelve months is usually a false alarm, not the transition.
- Move the morning nap 15 minutes later every two or three days until it lands near midday — and bring lunch forward with it.
- Alternating one-nap and two-nap days for a few weeks is the transition working, not failing.
- Expect four to six weeks, with weeks two and three the worst. Protect an early bedtime throughout.

Going from two naps to one is the longest and least tidy of the nap transitions. It takes weeks rather than days, it goes backwards in the middle, and it is very commonly started two or three months too early because of a fortnight of nap refusal that would have passed on its own.

## When it really happens

A single afternoon nap is established somewhere between fifteen and twenty-four months in the cohort data.[\[1\]](#ref-we) Most children make the move between thirteen and eighteen months. Before twelve months it is rare, and a twelve-month-old refusing the morning nap for a week is far more likely to be doing something else.

15–24 months

## The twelve-month false alarm

Around eleven to thirteen months there is a well-known stretch where the morning nap is fought or refused, often alongside a burst of walking practice and a run of early waking. Families read it as the transition, drop to one nap, and end up with an overtired toddler and a 5am start. The tell is that a true transition arrives slowly and stays; a false alarm ends in one to two weeks and the morning nap comes back on its own.

If in doubt, wait

The cost of dropping the second nap too early — weeks of overtiredness, early waking, a harder bedtime — is much higher than the cost of holding it a few weeks too long. When the signs are ambiguous, keep two naps and shorten the morning one instead.

## The signs that mean it is real

- The morning nap is refused, or taken and then the afternoon nap is refused — for two or three weeks, not one.
- Taking both naps pushes bedtime past 8pm, and your toddler is still not tired at it.
- The morning nap has drifted later and later on its own, towards late morning.
- Night sleep is fragmenting or early waking has appeared with no other explanation.

### How to make the move

Move the morning nap, don't delete it. Expect four to six weeks.

1. 1

Push the morning nap later in small steps

15 minutes every two or three days. You are aiming to land the single nap somewhere around 11:30 to 12:30, after an early lunch.

2. 2

    Bring lunch forward

A toddler cannot make it to a 12:30 nap on a 12:30 lunch. Eat at 11:15–11:30 during the shift, then move it later again once the nap settles.

3. 3

Let some days have two naps

Alternating between one-nap and two-nap days for a few weeks is the transition, not a failure of it. Follow the day you are actually having.

4. 4

    Protect an early bedtime

17:45–18:30 is normal on one-nap days during the shift. Bedtime moves back later once the single nap lengthens.

5. 5

Aim for a nap of about two hours

Once it settles, a single nap of roughly two hours is the pattern seen through the toddler and preschool years. A 45-minute single nap means the day is not there yet.

A worked example, based on a 6:45 start

The single nap is doing the work of two, so the windows around it get long — around five hours before and five or more after. That is the point at which [wake window stacking](/learn/sleep/wake-window-stacking) stops being a nice idea and becomes the thing holding the day up, and the [wake window calculator](/tools/wake-window-calculator) is quicker than doing it on paper each morning.

The nap is late, not longer

The most common mistake is keeping the old 9:30 nap and just skipping the afternoon one. That leaves seven or eight waking hours before bedtime. The single nap has to move towards midday, or the second half of the day collapses.

Dalo Sleep

Four weeks of days, on one screen

Dalo Sleep keeps the naps, windows and bedtimes together, so a transition this long can be judged on the trend instead of on yesterday.

## How long it takes

Four to six weeks is typical, and it is normal for weeks two and three to look worse than week one. If you are still alternating after two months, or your toddler is clearly exhausted every afternoon, the honest move is to go back to two naps for a few weeks and try again — nothing is lost by doing that.

## What to measure while it is messy

Total sleep, not nap count. The AASM consensus recommends 11–14 hours per 24 hours for one- to two-year-olds, including naps.[\[3\]](#ref-aasm) Total sleep is falling steadily across this period anyway — reference curves show the decline continuing right through the second year[\[2\]](#ref-ig) — so a transition that lands your toddler in that range with a settled bedtime has worked, even if the schedule never looks like anyone else's.[\[5\]](#ref-nhs)

As with everything about napping, the evidence base is descriptive: a systematic review of napping from birth to five years found only observational studies, all rated low quality.[\[4\]](#ref-th) Ages and durations here are what large groups of children have done, not what a trial has shown to be best — the toddler in front of you is the better source.

## Questions, answered

When do toddlers go down to one nap?

Most between thirteen and eighteen months, with cohort data putting a settled single afternoon nap somewhere between fifteen and twenty-four months. Before twelve months it is unusual, and refusal at that age is much more often a temporary phase tied to new motor skills.

What time should the single nap be?

Around 11:30 to 12:30 for most toddlers on a 6:30–7:00 wake-up, after an early lunch. Keeping the old mid-morning time is the most common mistake — it leaves seven or eight waking hours before bed, which no early bedtime fully rescues.

Can we do one nap on some days and two on others?

Yes — that is what the transition actually looks like, usually for several weeks. Follow the day in front of you: two naps after a bad night, one after a good one, and an earlier bedtime on the one-nap days. Rigidly enforcing one nap before your toddler is ready just adds overtiredness.

The single nap is only 45 minutes. Is that enough?

Usually it means the day is not settled yet rather than that your toddler needs less sleep. A settled single nap runs closer to two hours. In the meantime, treat a 45-minute nap as a signal to bring bedtime forward that evening, and keep the option of a second short nap open for a few more weeks.
