Komplet guide til, hvordan du tilbereder og serverer hijiki til din baby, efter alder.
Sidst gennemgået: maj 2026
For babies 6-9 months old, hijiki must be prepared meticulously to ensure it is safe. Begin with dried hijiki, rehydrating it in water for at least 20-30 minutes until fully softened. It is critical to then rinse it multiple times under running water. Cook the rehydrated hijiki by simmering it until it is very tender. To serve, you must either puree it into a smooth, thin paste or mince it extremely finely with a sharp knife, ensuring no long strands remain. These strands pose a significant choking risk. Always supervise your baby closely during feeding and ensure they are seated upright.
Start with a very small amount, such as 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (2-5 ml) of hijiki puree, mixed into a familiar food. Due to its potent flavor and high fiber content, introducing it gradually is best. Mix the puree into congee, oatmeal, or a root vegetable mash like sweet potato or carrot. To boost the absorption of its plant-based iron, pair it with a food rich in vitamin C, such as a few spoonfuls of pureed bell pepper or tomato. Offer it on a pre-loaded spoon to encourage your baby to practice self-feeding from the start.

As your baby develops their pincer grasp and chewing skills between 9 and 18 months, you can offer a bit more texture. After rehydrating and thoroughly rinsing the hijiki, cook it until it is completely tender. Instead of pureeing, you can now finely chop the cooked seaweed into very small, confetti-like pieces. Ensure no piece is longer than a pea to minimize the risk of choking on its stringy texture. You can then mix these tiny pieces into other soft foods. Always supervise your child, ensure they are seated, and avoid distractions during mealtime to promote safe eating habits.
You can offer 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml) of finely chopped, cooked hijiki per serving. Mix the small pieces into soft, scoopable foods like scrambled eggs, mashed tofu, or whole milk yogurt to ensure it is consumed safely. This method also helps your baby get accustomed to the new texture. To enhance iron absorption, continue pairing it with vitamin C-rich foods like kiwi, strawberries, or broccoli florets. Adding a healthy fat source, such as mashed avocado mixed into the same dish, will provide essential calories for growth and aid nutrient absorption. Encourage self-feeding with hands or a spoon.

For toddlers over 18 months who are proficient chewers, hijiki can be prepared with less chopping. First, rehydrate the dried seaweed in warm water for 20-30 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly several times to reduce sodium and potential inorganic arsenic content. Cook it until tender, which may involve simmering it in dashi or water for 15-20 minutes. At this stage, you can leave the strands whole or give them a rough chop. This texture is excellent for mixing into stir-fries with vegetables and tofu, or adding to noodle soups. Always supervise your toddler during meals and ensure they are seated upright.
Serve toddlers about 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml; 0.5-1 oz) of cooked hijiki as part of a varied meal. At this age, it’s a fantastic ingredient to incorporate into Japanese-style rice balls (onigiri), mix into fried rice, or serve as a side dish (nimono) simmered with carrots and tofu. Its rich iodine content is vital for healthy thyroid function and brain development. Pair it with a source of healthy fat, like a drizzle of sesame oil, to aid the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Encourage your toddler to use utensils to practice their fine motor skills.
