Komplet guide til, hvordan du tilbereder og serverer molokhia (jute leaves) til din baby, efter alder.

For babies 6 to 9 months old, molokhia must be cooked thoroughly until very soft and then pureed or minced to ensure a safe consistency. Due to its mucilaginous texture when cooked, it naturally becomes a smooth, albeit slightly viscous, puree. You can boil or steam fresh or frozen leaves until tender, then blend with a little water, broth, or breast milk to achieve a smooth consistency. For baby-led weaning, this smooth puree can be mixed with grains like oatmeal to make it easier to scoop. Always supervise your baby closely during feeding and ensure they are seated upright.
Start by offering 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml; 0.5-1 oz) of smooth molokhia puree. You can serve it on its own to introduce the unique flavor or mix it with iron-fortified baby cereal or a familiar vegetable puree. To boost nutrient absorption, add a small drizzle of olive oil or another healthy fat, which helps the body absorb the fat-soluble vitamin A found in molokhia. Offer the puree on a pre-loaded spoon to encourage self-feeding, or allow your baby to explore the texture with their hands. Its naturally viscous texture can be a fun new sensory experience.

Between 9 and 18 months, as your baby develops their pincer grasp and becomes more adept at chewing, you can offer molokhia that is finely minced or shredded rather than fully pureed. After boiling or steaming the leaves until very soft, chop them finely with a knife. This slightly coarser texture encourages chewing. You can serve the minced leaves on their own or mixed into other soft foods like rice, couscous, or mashed potatoes. The natural viscosity helps bind the food together, making it easier for self-feeding. Always ensure your child is seated and supervised during mealtimes to prevent choking.
Offer a serving of 2-4 tablespoons (30-60 ml; 1-2 oz) of finely minced molokhia. At this age, it works wonderfully when stirred into soft grains like quinoa, couscous, or small pasta shapes to create a more substantial, textured meal. The sticky consistency helps the grains clump together, making it easier for your baby to scoop with their hands or a spoon. For a nutritionally complete meal, pair it with a soft-cooked protein like flaked fish or shredded chicken, and ensure a source of healthy fat, like avocado, is included on the plate.

For toddlers 18 months and older, you can prepare molokhia much like you would for the rest of the family. The leaves can be roughly chopped before being cooked into a stew or soup. At this age, their chewing skills are more advanced, but ensure any other ingredients in the dish, like meats or other vegetables, are also cut into safe, bite-sized pieces no larger than a half-inch. Continue to cook the molokhia until it is very tender. Always supervise your toddler during meals, ensuring they are seated upright to minimize choking risk and can focus on chewing their food thoroughly.
Serve your toddler about 1/4 cup (60 ml; 2 oz) of cooked molokhia as part of a balanced meal. At this stage, it's wonderful served as a traditional stew alongside rice and a protein like chicken or beef. This helps create a complete meal and introduces them to family dishes. Molokhia is a source of non-heme iron, and while it also contains vitamin C, pairing it with other vitamin C-rich foods like tomatoes or bell peppers in the stew can further enhance iron absorption. Encourage self-feeding with a spoon to promote independence and fine motor skills.
