A 35-minute nap feels like a failure. It is usually a completed sleep cycle, which is a different thing — and the reason most attempts to 'fix' it do not work.
A short nap is one sleep cycle
Infant sleep runs in cycles far shorter than an adult's. Measured from term, the cycle is around 47 minutes, lengthening only slightly to roughly 49–50 minutes by three and eight months.[1]

So a nap of 30 to 45 minutes is not a nap that went wrong. It is one full cycle, ending at the point where your baby surfaces to a light stage and — not yet able to link a second cycle — wakes up properly.
Cycle length increases slowly through early childhood, reaching something like the adult 85–90 minutes by school age. The ability to link cycles arrives gradually, and it arrives on its own.[3]
The metric is the 24-hour total, not the nap
The AASM consensus recommends 12–16 hours of sleep per 24 hours for infants aged 4–12 months, including naps, and 11–14 hours for one- to two-year-olds. Nowhere does it specify how that total should be divided.[2]
A baby taking four 40-minute naps and a baby taking two 80-minute naps can land on exactly the same total. If your baby is hitting the range across the day, waking content and growing normally, short naps are a scheduling inconvenience rather than a problem.
When it is worth acting
- Total sleep is consistently below the range for their age.[2]
- Your baby wakes crying and cannot make it to the next sleep without melting down.
- Naps got shorter suddenly after a period of longer ones, which usually points at the schedule rather than at development.
What actually helps
In roughly the order worth trying:
- Fix the window before the nap. Both too short and too long produce a single-cycle nap. Undertired babies have not built enough pressure; overtired babies wake on stress hormones.
- Darkness. Light is the strongest cue against continuing sleep, and a room that is dark enough is the cheapest intervention available.
- Consistent conditions across the whole nap. A baby who fell asleep in motion or on a chest and surfaces somewhere else at 40 minutes has every reason to stay awake.
- Protect the first nap of the day. It is usually the easiest to lengthen because sleep pressure is being rebuilt from a full night.
What tends not to help
- Feeding to sleep for the second cycle — it works in the moment and reliably becomes the only way a nap ever gets extended.
- Keeping a baby up longer in the hope of a longer nap. Past their window this produces a shorter one, not a longer one.
- Waiting it out for months. Cycle linking develops on its own timeline; the schedule is the part you can act on.
When it resolves
Most babies begin linking cycles somewhere between four and eight months, and many nap schedules settle into two longer naps by nine to twelve months as cycle length and sleep pressure both increase. Babies do not routinely sleep through the night until around a year either — short naps and broken nights are the same developmental story.[4]
